Diamonds Are a Movie’s Best Friend

There are a number of prominent movies where diamonds play a key role with the storyline or even make a certain part of the motion picture legendary. The splendour & elegance of gleaming diamonds, the characteristics which make the valuable gemstones so well known & beloved, are without a doubt behind the passion for diamonds obvious in numerous types of popular entertainment.

Motion pictures such as “Diamonds are Forever” in the James Bond franchise & Alfred Hitchcock’s “To Catch a Thief” , tales of suspense and intrigue, include characters working undercover to solve mysteries in the criminal underworld of diamond smugglers & jewel thieves in the 1960s. The “Pink Panther” series of comedies send up this kind of movie, telling a comparable story in a humorous, campy way.

“Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”, a song established in the original stage production of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, became a universal hit when performed in the film version by legendary screen beauty Marilyn Monroe, and enjoyed a revival with a new musical arrangement for “Moulin Rouge”, with lead vocals provided by actress Nicole Kidman.

A diamond story covering serious subject matter can be found in the recent film “Blood Diamond”, which drew a lot of attention to the violent regimes supported by illegal diamond trading and inspired many jewelers to begin investigating their sources and make the change to dealing only in conflict free diamonds.

Cult classic “The Breakfast Club”, one of John Hughes’ best-known films, uses a pair of diamond stud earrings to symbolize two very different characters coming to understand one another and falling in love. At first, rich girl Claire is angry at being quizzed about her diamond earrings by a less privileged student, regarding whether or not she had to earn any of the money to buy her earrings or expensive clothes. In the end, of course, they fall for each other and in one of the movie’s closing scenes Claire places one of her diamond earrings in her new beau’s ear.

The dramatic presence and effect of diamonds make them ideal for the unique plot twists and amusing metaphors audiences love to see.
